Ex - Box
Growing up I wasn’t allowed to play an Xbox, but as an adult,I’ll admit that I’ve had my fair share of “ex - boxes”. You don’t plan to make them and it starts innocently enough. But along the way,it becomes a museum of red flags,a playlist with three Billie Eilish songs in a row. A novelty mug that says “world’s okay boyfriend”,and a phone charger that still works better than yours.
And yes, that’s what makes it hard.
There’s always that one random thing that makes no sense out of context. An old book with a poem in it, a badge that says “I’m trying too”, a sweater with the word “Home” printed on it,as if I needed another reminder of my own life’s imposition.
You don’t keep it because you want them back, you keep it because once, someone loved you enough to leave something behind. You keep it,because you want proof that you are someone worth loving, even if it was just for a season.
And one day, maybe you’ll throw everything out, and I was better off with an Xbox, because at least back then,I knew when the game ended.
